Last year, our dedicated volunteers worked almost until Winter set in, removing English ivy, blackberry and other invasives from the ditches. The Town of Comox has been busy with improvements to trail beds and other areas of the park as well.
Meet us at the Macdonald Wood Park entrance (at corner of Balmoral and Croteau Roads in Comox). We will be focusing in the forest area near the foot bridge near Docliddle Road. You will find pink surveyors’ tape on trees and shrubs marking the location.
Protect other plants:

• Do as little damage as possible to the other plants on the ground.
• Leave the native trailing blackberry.
• Replace the leaves and other debris on the forest floor which you have disturbed.

Ivy on the ground:
• Pull the Ivy along the ground, then uproot the plant by pulling or use a hand tool.
• Pull and remove the Ivy at the base of and around the trunks of trees.

Ivy on and around trees:
• Cut all stems of Ivy growing up trees.
• If the Ivy stems come off easy then pull all off the trunk.
• If it’s hard to pull off the trunk then pull the Ivy down to the ground and remove from the soil.
• Remove Ivy from around the tree.

English Holly saplings:
• If small, pull Holly out by hand, or use a hand trowel to get the roots.
• Larger Holly will be dug out using a spade.

Plants removed can be piled next to the trails on tarps provided. It will be carried out to the side of Croteau Road.

Ivy is great on Christmas cards but not in the Park. Bring gloves, garden hand tools, weatherproof clothing.
